Understanding League Age and “Can my child play up?”
One of the most frequent registration questions is around age. Little League uses an age determination system called “League Age”. Naturally, there was a change to this system implemented 2 years ago, and it is still working its way through.
T-Ball and Baseball have the following League Age:
For players born on or before August 31, 2005: For the 2016 and 2017 seasons, these players will use the April 30 age determination date.
For players born on or after September 1, 2005: The age determination date will be will be August 31.
Confused? Me too. The age determination chart is on our site T-Ball, Baseball: https://magnolialittleleague.com/baseball-programs/age-chart-baseball/
Magnolia Little League has set our divisions based on League Age. On playing up below League Age 9, divisions AA and below, unfortunately, the answer is no. This is due to safety concerns mixing players of various ages and physical development. At League Age 9, evaluations at the Pitcher & Catchers level and above, players will be drafted on to team based on skill.
Now Softball uses an entirely different League Age determination date which is January 1 (because somehow these things always need to be confusing). That is your daughter’s age on January 1 is her league age. All softball players at all levels have evaluations and will be placed on teams at appropriate league age.
